A Week in One of America's Best Kept Secrets

Tuesday, July 21, 2015

Summer has brought on quite a few changes around here recently... welcome changes. Chris' project in Pennsylvania wrapped up at the end of May so we spent a relaxing month off before packing up our home on wheels and moving on to the next adventure, Boston.

One of our weeks off was spent in West Virginia, home to my mother's side of the family and some of the most beautiful countryside in the US. It was just what Chris and I needed. Time to slow down, detach ourselves from distractions and enjoy family in a gorgeous place.

After a week at the family cabin, tucked in the Appalachian Mountains with no cell service or internet, you really start to live in the moment. No to-do lists, planning out the day, or stress. When it rained (which it did pretty much everyday), you just had to open up a good book or engage in a deep conversation. When it was sunny, you could put on your hiking boots, hop in the truck for some site-seeing, or in Chris' case, grab your fly rod. Wouldn't it be nice if life was always that simple?

As I look back at our trip, I remind myself just to live in the moment, be thankful for every day, rain or shine, and spend as much time with the people I love.

"Almost heaven, West Virginia
 Blue ridge mountains, Shenendoah river
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growin' like a breeze"

                                          - John Denver

West Virginia will always be a place close to my heart, such beautiful scenery, so many great memories and definitely America's best kept secret!
