Powder Skiing in....New England??

Sunday, February 26, 2017

Yes, you heard me right. When we first moved to Boston two years ago, we were warned about the harsh winters (granted they just had record snowfall the previous year) but our first winter was a joke. We chilled on the beach at Cape Cod on Christmas day and were in shorts in February, pretty much shattering any attempt at skiing. This year was leading up to the same results with milder than normal temps, but just our luck, a storm rolled through all of New England the second week of February dumping 2-3 feet of light, fluffy, good stuff. So we headed to the mountains of Vermont, strategically timed for the week before the schools let out for February vacation. And boy, did we hit it right!

We started in the quintessential, small country town of Stowe and checked into our hotel, The Trapp Family Lodge. Does that name ring a bell? If it does, you've probably seen The Sound of Music. When Georg and Maria von Trapp fled Nazi-occupied Austria, they settled in the mountains of Vermont, opening up a music camp, and later, a lodge on 2,500 beautiful acres of countryside. It was the perfect place to relax after a great day on the slopes.

We hit up the mountain the day after we arrived and couldn't have asked for better weather. It was a perfect, bluebird day.

And of course, no ski day is complete without a little apres at the beautiful, Stowe Mountain Lodge.

Days two and three consisted of a little more skiing, a little exploring and a lot of snow.

Oh, and by the way, those who think "fresh pow" is the best, has to be a freaking ski bunny. Like literally a rabbit and hop on that stuff. And definitely no wedging. I 'bout died on some moguls. But Chris loved it!

We managed to hit up three breweries and one distillery during our trip, Idletyme Brewing Company, Von Trapp Brewing, Long Trail Brewing Company and Smuggler's Notch Distillery. AND the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory. An obligatory activity during a ski trip, right?

Me after a few Hefeweizens.

Part two of Epic Ski Trip took us to Killington, Vermont, "The Beast of the East," for another gorgeous day of skiing with packed powder, my favorite.

Summing up our trip, we slowly made our way home, admiring how insanely beautiful Vermont is and grabbing one last beer at the coolest brewery. Not only is it overlooking a meandering river, it also happens to be on a snow-mobiling, cross-country skiing and hiking trail, hence the name, Long Trail Brewery.

We officially fell in love with Vermont and highly recommend a trip to Stowe and Killington during the winter. Just be sure to keep an eye on the snow forecast for some great New England skiing!
